The S&P BSE Sensex snapped a 4-day losing streak to edge higher on Friday, rebounding as Tata SteelBSE 4.56 % surged after its March-quarter operating profit beat analyst estimates and as recently beaten-down blue chips such as Larsen & Toubro recovered.
The 50-share Nifty Index closed below its key psychological level of 6000 for second day in a row.
The 30-share index provisionally closed at 19,731.27, up 56 points or 0.29 per cent. It touched a high of 19833.14 and a low of 19568.49 in trade today.
The Nifty ended at 5983.55, up 16.50 points or 0.28 per cent. It touched a high of 6,015.30 and a low of 5936.80 in trade today.
Among the sectoral indices, the BSE Consumer Durable Index ended 2.12 per cent higher, followed by the BSE Metal Index which moved up 1.8 per cent.
The BSE Power Index gained 0.95 per cent, the BSE Capital Goods Index was up 1.6 per cent and the BSE Banking Index was trading 1.12 per cent higher.
The BSE HealthCare Index was down 1.02 per cent, followed by the BSE IT Index which closed 0.47 per cent lower.
Tata Steel (4.56 per cent), Tata PowerBSE 3.75 % (3.75 per cent), L&T (2.7 per cent) and ICICI BankBSE 2.60 % (2.6 per cent) were among top Sensex gainers.
Sun PharmaBSE -3.67 % (3.6 per cent), Hindalco (1.7 per cent), CiplaBSE -1.63 % (1.6 per cent) and TCS (1.5 per cent) were among top Sensex losers.
