Sensex gave lowest close in since two weeks


The S&P BSE Sensex fell for a third consecutive session on Wednesday, to mark its lowest close in almost two weeks after Larsen & Toubro slumped more than 6 percent after its orderbook guidance sparked worries about the health of the domestic economy. 

BSE SENSEX  index ended at 20,078.83, down 32.78 points or 0.16 per cent. It touched a high of 20,220.35 and a low of 20,000.86 in trade today. 

The Nifty closed at 6,100.95, down 13.15 points or 0.22 per cent. It touched a high of 6,147.60 and a low of 6,074.45 in trade today. 

The S&P BSE Midcap Index was down 0.77 per cent and the S&P BSE Smallcap Index fell 0.82 per cent. 

The S&P BSE Capital Goods Index fell 3.84 per cent, the S&P BSE Realty Index was 3.54 per cent lower, the S&P BSE Oil & Gas Index was down 1.01 per cent and the S&P BSE Power Index was down 0.61 per cent. The S&P BSE FMCG Index was up 0.85 per cent and the S&P BSE Healthcare Index moved 0.43 per cent higher. 


Larsen & Toubro (5.57 per cent), Tata PowerBSE -2.16 % (2.16 per cent), Hero MotoCorpBSE -2.04 % (2.04 per cent), GAIL (1.34 per cent) and Sterlite Industries (1.25 per cent) were among the Sensex losers. 

Shares of Larsen & Toubro tanked following lower than expected quarterly results. The company posted 6.8 per cent drop in net profit at Rs 1,787.94 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2013 against net profit of Rs 1,920.41 crore in the same period of previous fiscal. ET Now had estimated a net profit figure of Rs 1,880 crore. 

Sun PharmaBSE 2.90 % (2.90 per cent), Bharti AirtelBSE 2.25 % (2.25 per cent), Dr Reddy's Laboratories (1.84 per cent), NTPCBSE 1.48 % (1.48 per cent) and ITC (1.28 per cent) were among the top Sensex gainers. 

Market breadth was negative on the NSE with 871 gainers against 1,448 losers. 

Foreign institutional investors bought shares worth Rs 679.44 crore while domestic institutional investors sold equities worth Rs 866.7 crore on Tuesday as per the provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.
